Getting to Kotagiri is as much about the journey as the destination. Depending on whether you want forest views or a smooth drive, here are three ways to reach:
1. The Forest Route (Classic & Wild):
- Route: Bangalore โ Mysore Expressway โ Bandipur โ Mudumalai โ Ooty โ Kotagiri.
- The Vibe: Offers the unmatched beauty of the Nilgiri Biosphere. You might spot elephants or deer, but be prepared for heavy weekend traffic and the 36 hairpin bends.
The Offbeat Route (Quiet & Scenic):
- Route: Bangalore โ Malavalli โ Anthiyur โ Kotagiri.
- The Vibe: Very less traffic. This route takes you through the stunning Sathyamangalam forest. Itโs perfect for those who want a peaceful, uninterrupted drive.
The Highway Route (Smooth & Fast):
- Route: Bangalore โ Salem โ Erode โ Mettupalayam โ Kotagiri.
- The Vibe: The most scenic climb from Mettupalayam. While slightly longer in distance, the roads are excellent, making it a stress-free option for a long weekend.
๐ก A Boutique Sanctuary: Hanging Huts Resort
Our home for this expedition was the Hanging Huts Resort. True to its name, the property feels perched right on the edge of natureโs lap. Surrounded by lush tea gardens and vibrant seasonal flowers, every balcony here offers a front-row seat to the theater of the hills.
Whether it was waking up to a golden sunrise with a hot cup of local tea or watching the mist roll over the valleys, the resort provided that rare “slow living” experience. But the real magic happened after dark.

Being away from city lights has its rewards. From our balcony, we managed to capture the majestic Milky Way in all its glory. Seeing the galaxy stretched across the Nilgiri sky with a Nikon Z6II was a reminder of why we travel, to feel small in the best way possible.

๐ Chasing Waterfalls: Catherine Falls
No trip to Kotagiri is complete without visiting Catherine Falls. Located about 8km from the resort, the journey involves a beautiful drive followed by a 1km trek downwards.
Travelerโs Note: The final stretch is a very steep down-climb. Make sure you have proper grip shoes. We visited in the summer, so the water flow was gentle enough for a natural bath. However, always check the “pulse” of the water flow if you are visiting during or post-monsoon, as it can become quite powerful.
