Rufous Sibia – The Monk of the Mountains

High in the misty oak and forests of the Himalayas, there lives a bird that never seems to stop moving. Meet the Rufous Sibia.

Dressed in a beautiful palette of warm cinnamon and rufous-orange, these birds are easily spotted by their contrasting black caps and striking white wing-bars.

But it’s not just their looks that stand out—it’s their personality. Rufous Sibias are incredibly social. They travel in noisy, active parties, hopping through the canopy with acrobatic ease. Whether they are hunting for insects or sipping nectar from bright red blossoms, they do it with a flair that makes them a favorite for birdwatchers.

Listen closely, and you’ll hear their signature call—a ringing, flute-like whistle that echoes through the mountain valleys. It’s one of the most iconic sounds of the Himalayan spring.

Bold, beautiful, and full of life, the Rufous Sibia is a true gem of the high altitudes. If you ever find yourself in the mountains of Asia, just look up—the party is usually where they are.
