Meet the Malabar Pied Hornbill – a large, striking near-threatened bird endemic to India’s Western Ghats and Sri Lanka’s forests. Its black-and-white plumage, massive yellow bill with casque, and raucous calls make it unmistakable as it bounds through tall trees.
These omnivores feast on ripe figs, insects, small lizards, and even bird eggs, using their enormous bill to pluck fruit from branches. Males and females look similar, but during breeding, the female seals herself inside a tree cavity with her own droppings, leaving just a slit for the male to feed her and their chicks.
From January to April, 2-4 white eggs become fluffy chicks that grow rapidly on regurgitated fruit. Once fledged, the female breaks out to help feed the noisy youngsters.
This ancient-looking bird symbolizes the health of tropical forests – protect their habitat to ensure these majestic hornbills continue to thrive!
